Tuning is the adjustment of the tension of your piano's strings to align the musical intervals. A standard piano has over 200 strings, pulling with a combined tension of 15 to 20 tons. Even slight changes in temperature and humidity can cause the soundboard to expand or contract, altering the string tension and putting the piano out of tune.
I use a combination of traditional aural skills and state-of-the-art electronic tuning technology to ensure extreme accuracy and stability. The result is a piano that sings with clarity and warmth.
The piano sounds sour or out of tune
Unisons (notes with 3 strings) sound fuzzy
Regular maintenance schedule (every 6 months)
After moving the piano
Significant changes in seasonal weather
Before a performance or special event
Pitch raise (if necessary) to A440 standard
Fine tuning of all strings
Pedal check and minor adjustments
Assessment of overall piano health
Humidity control advice
Minor repair recommendations
A standard tuning appointment takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. I treat every instrument with the same care I would give a concert grand.
Stability is my priority. I use solid tuning techniques to 'set' the strings and pins so the tuning holds as long as possible, even with heavy playing.
